Woodland
Fragile Habitats
Diverse Swards

We very much see ourselves as custodians of Pirntaton for future generations and always farm with the best interests of the soil, water and wildlife in mind.

WOODLAND

Recent years have seen us plant a significant area (over 50 hectares) of New Woodland Creation, taking the total area of woodland on the farm to over 100ha. This includes areas of commercial conifer as well as a large percentage of native hardwoods and upland birch. This will greatly increase the carbon that is absorbed from the atmosphere and sequestrated on the farm, as well as offering a more diverse income for future generations. Many of the watercourses have been fenced off and planted to minimise diffuse pollution and create wildlife corridors linking many of the new and existing woodland areas.

FRAGILE HABITATS

For years we have grazed our heather moorland and wetland areas very sympathetically, in order to preserve both these valuable habitats. They are home to large populations of many of the threatened wader species, including Curlew, Oystercatcher, Snipe, Green and Golden Plover. The moor also has a healthy population of Red Grouse and is very lightly stocked with sheep over winter to allow the heather to regenerate.

DIVERSE sWARDS

In recent years we have also included more “diverse swards” into our rotation. we now routinely sow Plantain and a mixture of clovers into our new leys to improve soil structure, health and fertility. this reduces our need for artificial fertilisers, increases water holding capacity (and hence water run-off) and helps with drought tolerance.
